China, known for its historic landmarks, modern cities, and diverse cultural heritage, requires most foreign travelers to obtain a Tourist Visa (L Visa) before arrival. This visa is typically issued for short stays dedicated to sightseeing, leisure, or visiting family and friends.

Applicants for the L Visa usually need a valid passport, completed visa application form, recent photo, travel itinerary, proof of accommodation, and sometimes round-trip tickets. Some travelers may be eligible for visa-free transit (24/72/144 hours) in select cities when connecting to a third country, offering a convenient option for short visits.

For longer stays or purposes such as work, study, or family residence, travelers must apply for the appropriate long-term visa category. Tourist visas are generally not extendable unless under special circumstances, so visitors should plan according to their travel duration.

It depends on your nationality. As of recent updates, China allows visa-free short-term entry (up to 30 days) for passport holders from a growing list of countries for tourism, business, family visits, or transit.

If using visa-free entry: stay allowed is up to 30 days. If entering with a visa: check that your visa is still valid, you have remaining entries, and note the allowed “duration of stay” per entry. Overstaying or entering after visa expiry can lead to denial or penalties. For all: you may be asked for documents like return or onward tickets, proof of accommodation, and possibly reason of visit (tourism, business, family, etc.). Visa waiver or transit visa-free does not allow work, long-term stay, study, or journalistic activities.
