Hungary Visa Information

Travel Entry Rules & Tourist Visa Options for Hungary

Hungary, a popular Central European destination, is known for its thermal spas, historical architecture, and the beautiful capital city of Budapest. As a Schengen Area member, Hungary follows standardized entry rules for tourists coming from outside the Schengen zone.

Travelers from visa-exempt countries can visit Hungary for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without applying for a visa. Others will need a Schengen Tourist Visa (Type C), which allows short stays for tourism, visiting friends or family, or leisure travel. Applicants typically need a valid passport, travel insurance, accommodation proof, financial means, and a travel itinerary.

If visitors want to stay longer than the allowed short-term period, they must apply for appropriate long-stay visas or residence permits. Hungary also offers specific permits for work, studies, and family reunification for those planning extended stays.

For short stays (tourism, business, visits), you need a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) — unless your nationality is visa-exempt. This visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

You must submit a valid passport (with at least 2 blank pages; validity at least 3 months beyond your planned departure), a completed application form, recent passport-size photos, proof of accommodation, return or onward travel ticket, proof of sufficient funds, and travel/international medical insurance (minimum coverage ~€30,000).

You should apply through the embassy/consulate of the country that is your main destination (longest stay or primary purpose). If stays are equal or unclear, apply through the country of first entry into the Schengen Area.
