Iceland Visa Information

Visitor Entry Rules & Tourist Visa Options for Iceland

Iceland, famous for its glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, and Northern Lights, is part of the Schengen Area, meaning its tourist entry rules follow standard Schengen guidelines. Travelers from visa-exempt countries can visit Iceland for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without needing a visa.

Those who require prior authorization must apply for a Schengen Tourist Visa (Type C). This visa allows short-term visits for tourism, leisure, or visiting family or friends. Applicants typically need a valid passport, round-trip travel plans, proof of accommodation, travel insurance, and documentation showing sufficient financial means. For stays longer than the typical short visit, travelers must apply for a long-term visa or residence permit, depending on their purpose—such as work, study, or family reasons. Iceland does not issue long-stay tourist visas, so extended leisure stays require different permit categories.

Iceland is part of the Schengen Area, so many nationalities enjoy visa-free travel. If your country is visa-exempt, you can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business or short visits.

For non-EEA/EFTA travellers, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen area, and must have been issued within the last 10 years. At border control, travellers may also be asked to show a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay.

You can apply for a visa to Iceland up to 6 months before your intended arrival date, and no later than 15 calendar days before arrival.
