Latvia Visa Information

Visitor Entry Rules & Tourist Visa Options for Latvia

Latvia, known for its medieval old towns, Baltic coastline, and vibrant culture, follows Schengen Area entry rules for tourists. Travelers from visa-exempt countries can visit Latvia for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without needing a visa, making short trips simple and flexible.

Those who require authorization must apply for a Schengen Tourist Visa (Type C) before traveling. This visa permits short-term stays for leisure, sightseeing, or visiting friends and family. Applicants generally need a valid passport, travel insurance, accommodation proof, financial documents, and a return or onward ticket.

For longer stays or reasons beyond tourism, visitors must apply for the appropriate long-stay visa or residence permit. Latvia offers visas for study, employment, business, and family reunification, but extended tourist-only visas are not typically available.

If you’re from a country that has a visa-waiver agreement with the Schengen Area (e.g. most EU/EEA states, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and many others), you can enter Latvia visa-free for short stays (tourism, business, transit, visiting family/friends).

With visa-free entry or a valid Schengen short-stay visa, you can stay in Latvia (and other Schengen countries) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Typically you’ll need: A valid passport (issued within last 10 years, valid at least 3 months beyond your planned stay, and with blank pages) A completed visa application (if required), passport-size photo, travel medical insurance covering all Schengen states (minimum ~€30,000), proof of onward/return ticket, proof of accommodation, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Proof of sufficient funds: for stays up to 30 days, at least ~€14 per day; for longer stays, enough to cover living expenses (as per local standards).
