Tourist Visa Options & Entry Rules for Visiting Malawi

Malawi, known as the “Warm Heart of Africa,” attracts travelers with its friendly culture, Lake Malawi, and scenic national parks. Most nationalities require a visa to enter Malawi, and the country offers both an e-Visa and Visa on Arrival, making it convenient for short tourism visits.

The Tourist Visa typically allows a stay of up to 30 days, with the possibility to extend it inside the country through immigration offices. Applicants usually need a valid passport, proof of accommodation, a return or onward ticket, and sufficient financial means for the duration of their trip.

  • A covering letter is required either from the host in Malawi (must be signed by the host) or from the agent/accommodation provider (must be signed by the agent)
  • For those visiting friends or family, a copy of the host’s Immigration Residence Permit or passport (if the host is a Malawian citizen) is required
  • For business purposes, the host’s ID or Business Registration Certificate of Incorporation in Malawi is required
